Being a ‘Top Gun’ trader

One of the most highly anticipated movie sequels of recent times is upon us this week. Yes, Maverick will be donning his flight suit as he ‘feels the need for speed’ one more time….

The original story of Top Gun sees two highly talented naval aviators (Ice Man & Maverick) pitted against each other to see who is the Best Of The Best.

They both had very different flying styles, one of them being methodical and process driven, the other being a more emotionally charged flyer.

In the movie, the flare of Mavericks flying is seen as being the ‘best’, but in reality, it would have been Iceman that would have made it through Top Gun and Maverick wouldn’t have been allowed anywhere near a $30 million jet!

In trading, a large majority of retail traders would likely be more akin to Maverick, trading on emotions and the thrill of the game.

However, the profitable traders are those who can trade without those emotions and who can stick with their plan (or Wingman!).

I’m fortunate to have relationships with brokers and regulators. They all say the same thing. It’s the ‘boring’ traders who tend to outperform in the long run.

So I guess you have to ask yourself that question:

“Do you want to be right about the markets, or do you want to be profitable?”

For all you Top Gun fans enjoy the film but trade like Ice Man and don’t “lose that loving feeling!”

Until next time…
